Lean Not on Our Own Understanding

There are times in our life when difficult situations present themselves and we cannot understand how circumstances possibly can improve. If we allow ourselves to become afraid, we are discounting our faith in the power of God and are leaning on our own understanding. When fear takes root in our lives our attitude can cause us to get ahead of God by not waiting for Him to bring a resolution. We may fi nd ourselves attempting to solve the matter in a way that may not be pleasing to Him. This reaction displays that we trust and believe more in ourselves than in God Almighty. An example of this behavior is found in the book of Genesis. God promised to Abraham that his descendants would be as many as the stars in the sky. His wife Sarah who had been barren could not see the possibility of conceiving a child because she was beyond the age of child bearing. Sarah in her human effort tried to solve the matter by instructing her maidservant Hagar to sleep with her husband in order to bear him an heir. Certainly this was not the plan of God. Sarah underestimated God’s power. Several years later, in spite of the fact she was aged and barren, a son Isaac was born to Abraham and Sarah. God had been proven faithful. Sarah’s behavior displayed more confidence in her own plans than God’s unwavering promise. Is this not the same thing we do when we conduct our life in opposition to His written Word? When we choose to follow what makes sense in our own eyes, rather than in what God instructs, this choice demonstrates more of a trust in man than Almighty God. Faith in God must outweigh fear of circumstances and people. God’s promises are more powerful than any situation that may arise
